machine and peripheral management
Windows is able to function with devices of other companies but it needs driver so it is essential to install such driver before using particular device. That was problem in past but with new windows 8 all drivers are installed automatically as it is on Macs.
Vast majority of devices have to be bought exactly for Macs in order to function. The advantage is that you don’t have to install drivers because all of them are installed automatically from the internet.
| ||
security
Windows has users accounts secured with password, firewall that protects computer against threat from network.
Mac OS has security features like Sandboxing that protects the computer against threats by limiting the kind of operations that applications are able to perform for example opening documents.
| ||
file management
Program that is used in Windows for file management is called Explorer.
Program that Mac OS uses for file management is called Finder. It is better than its windows counterpart because it has icon for every file type.
| ||
device drivers
Drivers are programs that tells operating system how to communicate with some particular device. If you want some device to work you need get installed driver. Usually you get driver installation software with your device when you buy it. In Windows you can manage your drivers in Device Manager.
For Mac OS drivers are pretty the same and you need them installed in order to be able to use some device.
| ||
ability to customize
There is a lot of ways to customize Windows, for example you can customise appearance of your tool bar and Explorer.
It is really difficult to customise Mac OS and you would need additional software in order to do it. Probably only thing that user can customise is background of his desktop and his Dock. Dock is bar of icons that is on the bottom or side of your screen and it gives you easy access to applications that you put there.
| ||
support for connectivity of portable media
Windows supports vast majority of types of portable media if they have connectors that fits into a Windows computer.
Mac OS supports ordinary peripherals as monitor, computer mouse, headphones etc.
| ||
stability and reliability
Many applications can be installed into the Windows and therefore there is higher chance of stability and reliability problems.
Mac OS offers less applications and therefore it is potentially more stable and reliable than Windows. Time machine is feature that increases reliability of Mac because it creates backups of entire Mac so for example if you would lose your data because of some virus you could easily go back to backup created in time before you get virus and have your data back.
| ||
ease of management
Windows is probably the easiest to use operation system in the world and this is why everyone is buying them.
Mac OS is similar to Windows but it is newer type of operating system and therefore people aren’t so good at using it as they are at using Windows.
| ||
associated utilities
Windows provides more general but wider range of utilities.
Mac OS has very good utilities associated with graphic design, photo and video editing.
